Do not force a thicker filter into the slot

The third number in the nominal size indicates thickness. A 20x25x4 filter does not fit a 20x25x1 slot.

Thicker filters can offer more media area

More surface area may allow longer service life and lower pressure drop at comparable filtration levels, but product design varies.

Follow cabinet labeling

Use the exact dimensions and compatible models listed for your filter cabinet.

Why depth matters

A four-inch media filter usually has deeper pleats and more surface area, which can support longer service and manageable resistance in a compatible cabinet. A one-inch product is widely available and inexpensive per change but usually needs more frequent attention.

Do not substitute depths

A four-inch filter does not belong in a one-inch rack, and stacked thin filters are not equivalent. Conversion requires a compatible cabinet and professional judgment. Compare published actual dimensions because deep-filter sizes can be cabinet-specific.

A responsible selection process

1. Confirm the nominal and actual dimensions required by the cabinet.
2. Check the equipment manufacturer’s supported filter efficiency.
3. Choose for the household concern rather than the largest number on the shelf.
4. Install the airflow arrow toward the blower or air handler.
5. Inspect the new filter after about 30 days and adjust the schedule to actual loading.
